Scaphoid Fracture
A comprehensive overview of a non-displaced scaphoid fracture in a baseball player
Maturation-Remodeling Phase
During this phase, there is a realignment of collagen, continued breakdown and synthesis. An increase of stress and strain will increase collagen realignment. A scar may present itself after 3 wks. Can take many years to complete. The athlete should continue to work on muscle endurance and power, but should also incorporate functional activities along with muscle speed, muscle power, agility, and should continue to work on cardiorespiratory endurance.
Exercises:
Dumbbell curls: To continue working on muscle strength and endurance, the athlete can use an approximately 10 lb dumbbell, bringing the wrist through flexion and extension for 10 reps x 3 sets in each motion.
Baseball throws: To work on more functional aspects of the rehab process and to ensure the athlete is ready to return to play, throw a baseball back and forth with the athlete for about 10 minutes. You may progress with them having them throw faster or more long distance. The athlete should have no pain and a normal throwing pattern with full wrist ROM.
Swinging a Bat: Set up a tee and have the athlete go through their swing. Focus on proper swinging form without over-swinging. Have them go through this motion for 20 reps
Goals:
Short term Goals: Reach a full ROM, re-establish a normal throwing pattern.
Long term Goals: Return to play.
Running Bases: To focus on cardiorespiratory endurance, have the athlete run bases on a baseball diamond. Have them run varying lengths (home to first, home to 2nd, home to third, home run) until they have increased their heart rate.
