Etiology:

  • Falling on an outstretched hand (FOOSH): the scaphoid falls in extension when the palmar surface experiences an excessive bending movement

  • Direct axial compression

Complications:

  • Non-Union Fracture: This can occur if the bone fails to heal properly, usually because the scaphoid has a low blood supply. A non-union fracture may require a bone graft to ensure the bone comes together.

  • Avascular Necrosis: This occurs when the blood supply to the bone is so poor that the piece of bone doesn't get enough oxygen and dies. This condition may also require a bone graft to heal properly.

  • Arthritis: The previous conditions can lead to arthritis in the wrist. It can be characterized by aching in the wrist, decreased ROM in wrist, and pain with activites such as gripping and lifting objects.
